The most common decorating mistake in small apartments is a rug that's too small. It happens because a larger rug costs more and takes up more visual space on the shopping page — so people default to something 4x6 or 5x8 and then wonder why their living room looks like a waiting room.
A small rug floating in the center of a room doesn't define the space — it just marks the approximate center. A rug that extends under all the furniture legs creates a room within a room.
The Rule
Front legs of all seating on the rug. If you can go further and get all four legs on, do it. For my 10x12 living room, that meant an 8x10 rug. More than I wanted to spend. Completely transformative.
The Lighting Connection
A floor lamp positioned at the corner of the rug visually anchors the seating area and reinforces the "room within a room" effect. The circle of light from the lamp + the edge of the rug creates a bounded zone that feels designed even in an open floor plan.
