Brooklyn Apartment Tour: How I Made 480 Square Feet Feel Designed

When I tell people my apartment is 480 square feet, they usually say something sympathetic. But honestly? I love it. The size forced me to learn design principles I never would have figured out in a bigger space.

The Entryway (It's Also the Living Room)

My front door opens directly into the living area. I created a visual entry zone with a small console table and a plug-in wall sconce above it. This instantly signals "entry" without any physical separation.

The Living Room

One sofa, one chair, one coffee table. No TV stand — the TV is wall-mounted. An arc floor lamp in the corner provides ambient light and fills vertical space without taking up floor area. I removed the overhead light entirely and use it as storage for the original fixture.

The Bedroom

The biggest upgrade was replacing nightstand lamps with wall-mounted sconces on either side of the bed. This freed up my (tiny) nightstands for actual necessities and made the room feel instantly more designed.

The Kitchen

Plug-in pendant light over the counter, under-cabinet LED strip for task lighting, and a small lamp on the open shelving unit for warmth. Three sources, completely transformed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make a small apartment look bigger?

Use light colors, mirrors, and multiple light sources at different heights. Furniture with legs (vs. pieces that sit on the floor) creates visual openness. Keep pathways clear and use vertical space for storage. Consistent warm lighting throughout makes the space feel cohesive rather than choppy.

What furniture works best in a 500 square foot apartment?

Multi-functional pieces: sofa beds, ottomans with storage, dining tables that fold against the wall, and beds with under-bed storage. Keep large furniture to a minimum — one sofa, one accent chair maximum in a living area. Use floating shelves instead of bulky bookcases.

How do you style a small bedroom in an apartment?

Focus on the bed as the hero piece and keep everything else minimal. Bedside wall sconces instead of table lamps free up nightstand space. A large mirror reflects light and makes the room feel double the size. Use under-bed storage and keep the floor as clear as possible.
