Window Treatments for Renters: What You Can (and Can't) Do

Curtains are the fastest way to transform a rental apartment. They add color, texture, privacy, and the visual impression of height. They also require a rod, and a rod requires holes, and holes require landlord approval, and landlord approval requires a level of optimism I no longer possess.

Here's what actually works.

Tension Rods (Inside Mount)

For small windows where inside-mount looks intentional — bathroom, kitchen, bedroom — tension rods are completely invisible and completely removable. The rod sits inside the window frame under pressure. Nothing touches the wall.

No-Drill Brackets (Outside Mount)

For larger windows where you want the rod to extend beyond the frame (which makes windows look larger), adhesive Command curtain brackets work if you stay under the weight limit. Install at least four brackets for any rod over 48 inches. Light linen or sheer curtains only — anything heavier will pull the brackets off eventually.

The Lighting Complement

A wall sconce mounted beside or between windows ties the window treatment to the lighting scheme and makes both look more intentional. The sconce light bouncing off curtain fabric is genuinely beautiful at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do renters hang curtains without drilling?

Tension rods (for inside-mount between window frames), no-drill Command adhesive curtain rod brackets (rated up to 7 lbs when used correctly), and clip rings on a tension rod are the main options. For heavy curtains, use multiple adhesive brackets spaced 12–16 inches apart for weight distribution.

Can you hang curtains with Command strips?

Yes, with caveats. Use Command adhesive curtain rod brackets, not regular picture-hanging strips. Follow the weight limits exactly. Install on a clean, flat surface (not textured or wallpapered). Wait 72 hours before loading the rod with curtains. Heavier curtains require multiple brackets.

What curtains look best in a small apartment?

Floor-length curtains in a light, solid color make ceilings feel higher and rooms feel larger. Mount the rod 4–6 inches above the window frame (not at the frame edge) and extend the rod 6–8 inches beyond the frame on each side. This makes the window appear larger and floods the room with more light when the curtains are open.
