The Right Way to Hang String Lights in an Apartment

String lights are one of those things that can look either magical or like you never left your college apartment. The line between the two is narrower than you think.

The Hanging Rules

Always hang above eye level. I cannot stress this enough. String lights hanging at lamp height look tangled and chaotic. Hung along the ceiling line or draped across the upper wall, they look like stars. Same lights. Completely different effect.

Use adhesive Command hooks rated for at least 3 lbs. Install them at ceiling height every 18–24 inches. Let the lights drape slightly between hooks for a natural look.

The Layering Rule

String lights need other light sources to look intentional. I pair mine with a wall sconce below them — the sconce provides functional light and makes the string lights look like decor rather than the primary light source. Without other light, string lights look like you forgot to buy real lamps.

Bulb Type Matters

Vintage Edison bulbs at 2200–2700K only. Globe bulbs also work. Cool white string lights look terrible. This is not negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you hang string lights in a rental without holes?

Use adhesive hooks (Command hooks rated for the weight of the lights plus cord), cup hooks installed in molding (which doesn't count as wall damage in most leases), or tension rods across a ceiling corner with the lights draped over them. Avoid staples, tape (which pulls paint), and nails.

What are the design rules for string lights?

Hang string lights at eye level or above, never below it (below eye level looks messy and tangled). Use warm white (2700K) bulbs only — cool white looks cheap. Keep the cord organized and intentional. String lights work best as one element in a layered lighting scheme, not as the only light source.

Do string lights count as real lighting?

String lights are accent lighting only — they add warmth and atmosphere but don't provide enough lumens for tasks or primary illumination. Pair them with proper ambient and task lighting. Used alone in a room, they look underfurnished and dim.
